What Causes BMW Hard or No Starting?

What Causes BMW Hard or No Starting? There's a reason they are called the ultimate driving machine; BMWs are incredible on the open road. Of course, if you can't get to the open road because your car won't start, well, that's not much of a driving machine at all. No worries though, all types of vehicles can suffer from no start issues at some point in their lives and most of these types of problems are simple to resolve. Judging by the symptoms that you're experiencing you can often figure out what's wrong with your BMW. Here are four common issues that can prevent your BMW from starting.

Dead Battery

A dead battery is the most common reason any type of vehicle won't be able to start. While batteries can and will die at some point, usually between 3 and 5 years of use, it is also likely that your battery died due to leaving your lights on or something of that nature. If electronics, like lights or the radio, are used for too long when the engine isn't running the battery's juice will be drained, thus making it impossible to start your car without a jumpstart. The good news is that once you're back up and running the alternator will be able to recharge the battery.

Bad Alternator

As mentioned it is the alternator that keeps the battery charged. It is able to do this because the alternator generates electricity using the motion of the engine. This electricity is also used by other systems in the car as the engine runs. If the alternator fails you'll have trouble operating electronics throughout the car and once the alternator fails completely the battery will be drained and the car will be unable to start. Signs of a failing alternator include dim or flickering headlights or issues operating power seats and windows or problems with the radio.

Failed Starter

The starter motor is what gets the engine spinning when the key is turned (or the button is pushed). If the starter motor fails it is likely that you will hear a loud click or a series of clicks when you try and start the car. This is the sound the starter motor makes if it is actuating but not spinning.

Fuel Delivery Issue

If gas can't get to the combustion chamber the car will be unable to start. There are three primary issues that can arise with the fuel system that could cause this. They include a failed fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter or a malfunctioning fuel injection system. Proper diagnostics will need to be ran to determine the exact issue your BMW is suffering from.
