3 Signs Your BMW Needs Exhaust Repair

3 Signs Your BMW Needs Exhaust RepairAn exhaust leak is not only detrimental to the performance of your BMW, but it could be hazardous to your health as well. While the exhaust system has no moving parts past the valves in the engine, it's other parts can become worn out due to the constant change in temperature and pressure it undergoes. If an exhaust leak is present it could allow poisonous fumes to seep into the passenger cabin, putting yourself and anyone else at risk carbon monoxide inhalation. For this reason, along with the fact that an exhaust leak can drastically reduce fuel efficiency and hinder performance, it's important to keep tabs on the health of your BMW's exhaust. If you notice any of these signs of an exhaust leak be sure to get to the shop as soon as possible.

Loud engine

One of the most common symptoms of an exhaust leak is increased engine noise An exhaust leak will often cause the engine to sound as if it's rumbling with great power, but in reality it is not. The increased engine noise will be most audible during acceleration, such as approaching highway speed. The noise is louder during acceleration due to the increase in exhaust production.

Vibrating gas pedal

Another frequently reported sign of exhaust trouble is a vibrating gas pedal. When the exhaust fumes escape from the pipes they're suppose to be in it can cause the pedal to shake. Sometimes the steering wheel and other parts may shake too, depending on how bad the leak is. As with the increased engine noise this sign of trouble will also be more noticeable during acceleration.

Decrease MPGs

The oxygen sensor is located within the exhaust system in order to measure how much oxygen is passing through the engine and out of the tailpipe. This helps the car's computer calculate the proper air/fuel mix to keep the engine running efficiently. If an exhaust leak occurs the oxygen sensor will be unable to take proper measurements, and will generally read false high levels of oxygen in the exhaust. This causes a major increase of gas to be burnt, thus lowering MPGs by 40 percent or more.
