Is your BMW Up-to-Date on Oil Changes?

Is your BMW Up-to-Date on Oil Changes? Most types of auto maintenance is only required every 30,000 miles or so. Other types, such as transmission services, are only needed on some BMWs every 70,000 miles or more. Timing belts, if your vehicle is so equipped, often don't need to be replaced until you hit the 105,000 mile mark. However there are other maintenances that need to be completed much more frequently, such as rotating your tires every 10,000 miles. Yet there is one more service you will find yourself completing much more frequently for most BMWs.

Oil changes need to be completed in most BMWs every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, making them the most frequent service needed by your car. While the automaker may claim your vehicle could go more miles than that, it isn't recommended to go that long by most expert BMW technicians. Oil changes are imperative to a healthy engine, meaning you should never skip them. If you do you'll likely be facing extensive and expensive repairs. Here is why you should never put off the all important oil change.

Oil Changes Ensure Proper Engine Lubrication

Of course the most important aspect of an oil change is to ensure that the motor in your BMW is properly lubricated. Fresh oil is necessary to ensure that metal on metal contact is at a minimum in order to prevent harsh contact that can wear our engine parts very fast.

Fresh Oil Helps Regulate Engine Operating Temperature

Oil helps to regulate the temperature of the engine in a few different ways. First of all, fresh oil prevents the creation of heat by reducing the friction between moving parts of the engine. Secondly oil is engineered to absorb heat. However, as oil breaks down after many miles of use it loses its ability to properly lubricate or absorb heat.

Oil Changes Restore Fuel Efficiency & Power

During an oil change the old oil is drained from the motor, bringing with it dirt, dust, metal shavings and other contaminants that have ended up in the motor over the past few months. All of this debris that is mixed with the oil causes it to turn into a sludge like substance. This substance makes it hard for the engine to operate properly, reducing its power output and dropping its MPGs. When all of this stuff is removed during an oil change and fresh oil is poured in it helps to restore your BMW's engine function.
