Easy Maintenance Tips to Increase MPGs in Your BMW

Easy Maintenance Tips to Increase MPGs in Your BMWIn order to prevent breakdowns it is very important to keep up with scheduled BMW maintenance. These services include oil changes, filter replacements, 30/60/90K maintenance and more. But there is another reason why routine maintenance is important. These services help ensure your BMW is performing at peak levels and getting the best possible fuel economy. If you have noticed a drop in your vehicle's MPGs you may want to consider the following services, as doing them could greatly improve the distance you can go out of a tank.

Clean air filter

The air filter provides a very valuable service, cleaning the incoming air that is mixed with the gasoline to create the necessary air/fuel mix that your engine needs to run. If the air filter becomes clogged the engine will not be able to create the proper mixture. This will cause the engine to compensate for the lack of air by burning excessive amounts of fuel. Not only does this decrease your fuel economy but it can cause the engine to operate at hotter temperatures, which may result in additional problems.

Replace the spark plugs

The spark plugs are fed an electrical charge that causes them to spark. This spark is what ignites the air and fuel mixture. This tiny explosion must happen at a precise time in order to make the engine run properly. If the spark plugs become dirty it can cause the engine to misfire, igniting the mixture at the wrong time, which will cause the engine to run very poorly. This will also cause a drastic drop in fuel economy.

Properly inflate the tires

One of the easiest, yet most important things you can do to ensure that your BMW is getting optimal fuel efficiency is ensuring that your tires are properly inflated. If the tires are underinflated the engine will have to work harder in order to get the soft rubber to roll. The harder an engine has to work the more gas it burns. You can find out your vehicle tire's PSI rating, which stands for pounds per square inch, and is the measurement for how much air they should hold, by looking on the inside door jamb or in the owner's manual. Most gas stations have free PSI checking tools and inexpensive air pumps to inflate your tire to the correct PSI.

Taking care of your BMW's maintenance needs pays off in the long run. You will not only save money on gas by keeping your car in peak running condition, but you will help to prevent the need for major repairs caused by failed parts.
