My BMW's Check Engine Light is on, Now What?

The orange glow of the check engine light is unmistakable. Staring at you from under your tach or speedometer, letting you know of trouble ahead. The check engine light is part of your BMW's onboard diagnostic system, which includes numerous other indicators for different systems, including the charging system and brakes. The check engine light is actually a good thing, giving you chance to have a problem resolved before it turns into a bigger headache. While there are many things that can trigger the light, there are several issues that are seen over and over again. Some of the most common check engine light problems in BMWs include the following.

Bad MAF Sensor

The mass air flow sensor monitors incoming air and calculates how much needs to be mixed with the gasoline to ensure a proper running car. If the MAF sensor fails it will cause your vehicle to run rich, using excessive amounts of fuel.

Faulty Oxygen Sensor

The oxygen sensor monitors exhaust for levels of oxygen and then transmits the information to help with the air/fuel mixture. A malfunctioning O2 sensor could end up causing a drop in fuel efficiency by as much as 30 percent.

Fuel Injector Issue

If one or more of the fuel injectors is unable to adequately spray gasoline the light could be triggered. This could be caused by a mechanical issue or even just gunk build up within the injector.

Bad Spark

If the spark plugs are misfiring the light may also come one. This sort of misfire is usually caused by dirty or corroded spark plugs, but it may also be due to a timing issue inside the engine.

Loose Gas Cap

If the check engine light comes on the best thing you can hope for is a loose or broken gas cap. This will tripper the light because the opening will allow gas from the tank to evaporate out of the filler hose, which will be detected by the EVAP system.

When the check engine light comes on in your BMW don't wait to head to the shop. It is important to have the problem diagnosed and repaired to prevent further damage.
